IIT-MadrasIIT-Madras has developed a new system -- Uninterrupted Direct Current (UDC) -- that will guarantee continuous power supply from the grid, even during outages. Ashok Jhunjhunwala, member of the Prime Minister's Science Advisory Council and professor at the institute's department of electrical engineering, IIT-M director Bhaskar Ramamurthi and their team have designed the system, which is touted as the first of its kind.

A release from the institute said the UDC would ensure that a limited supply of electricity from the grid is available throughout the year, even when demand exceeds supply. The limited supply of electricity can be used to run bulbs, fans and television sets and charge cellphones.

The UDC is set to be introduced in several states, including Tamil Nadu, as proof of concept.
