NDMCA day after Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal took oath as a member of the New Delhi Municipal Council (NDMC), the civic body on 22-03-2015 passed a resolution for reducing power tariff and providing up to 20,000 litres of free water per month to households under its jurisdiction.

The Delhi government had announced the measures — bringing down power bills by half for consumption of up to 400 units and giving free water to households consuming up to 20,000 litres per month — weeks ago.

"A proposal to implement 50 per cent reduction in power tariff for those consuming up to 400 units was passed. Moreover, the resolution also included providing up to 20,000 litres of free water per household per month," a senior NDMC official said.

According to the NDMC website, there are nearly 9,000 domestic water connections meters under its jurisdiction, which consume up to 20,000 litres per month.

Officials said the decision to provide electricity and water in the area at subsidised rates is likely to cost the civic agency Rs 22.5 crore. "This amount, however, will be reimbursed by the Delhi government," an official said.

"This subsidy will bring relief to around 73 per cent of the total consumers in the NDMC area. The council distributes power in areas under its jurisdiction and has 70,000 consumers of which 44,000 are domestic consumers. Of the total domestic consumers, the power subsidy is going to benefit 32,000," the official said.

On Thursday, the Delhi Jal Board (DJB) had increased water tariff in the city by 10 per cent for consumption exceeding 20,000 litres per month.

DJB vice-chairman Kapil Mishra said the hike would affect only 10 per cent of consumers.

"The hike is applicable only on consumption of over 20,000 litres a month. It is likely to affect commercial consumers and families who have that kind of consumption," Mishra had said.
