Chief minister inaugurated distribution of 1.5 crore CFLs

VSThe distribution of the CFLs for the legislators were held at the Assembly lounge on March 15,2010. Chief Minister V S Achuthanandan inaugurated the distribution by presenting the CFL to Opposition leader Oommen Chandy. Speaker K Radhakrishnan presided over the function. Pilot distribution of 1.5 crore Compact Fluorescent Lamps (CFL) was inaugurated at the Thirumala, Mangalapuram, Attingal, Poovar, Pallam, Changanassery, Kuruppumthara and Kottarakkara sections of the KSEB on March 16, 2010. The Minister AK Balan aid that as a part of the energy conservation programme, a widespread campaign was required.

The project will cost Rs 100 crore. The CFL distribution for the public will begin on March 28,2010 at Kuttichal. Union Minister for Non-Conventional Energy Farooq Abdulla will inaugurate the distribution when he arrives here to launch a scheme to provide two CFLs and a solar panel to 4,500 remote villages in the State which will cost Rs 7 crore.

The Minister said that last year, 10 lakh CFLs had been distributed free of cost. This had helped in saving energy by 30 MW. By distributing 1.5 crore CFLs of 14 watts to 75 lakh domestic consumers, energy consumption will be reduced by one third. The Government hopes to save 250 MW of power per day from the project, the Minister said.He said that setting up of 250 MW thermal plant required Rs 1500 crore. But this will cause emission of 20 lakh tonnes of carbon. The 75 lakh domestic consumers will be given two CFLs each when they hand over two incandescent bulbs of 60 watts and Rs 30 in return.

He said that the CFLs were made available at a rate of Rs.66 thorough a global tender. The CFL will cost Rs.150 in the market. Energy Management Centre will head the distribution of the lamps at the State-level. The State Government has sanctioned Rs 40 crore for the Energy Management Centre to purchase the CFLs, he said.
