DroneIn order to plug leakages, a recurrent source of power failure and loss in revenue, Kerala State Electricity Board (KSEB) will use drones to identify breakages, loose contact and encroachments in high transmission lines. In a first-of-its-kind initiative in India, the board will buy one drone on a pilot basis fitted with thermal camera and light detection and ranging (LiDAR). KSEB has earmarked Rs 2 crore to purchase the drone and has already invited expression of interest.

"The drone will be used in our extra high tension transmission corridor. This is a preventive measure to bring down interruptions (power outages) and thereby increase customer satisfaction," said an official in power system engineering wing of the KSEB. High tension transmission lines are those between 66kv to 220kv in Kerala and such lines are drawn on 11,281 circuit km. In the first phase, the drone will be used in an urban area - Thiruvananthapuram -and in hilly terrain in Pathanamthitta.

Currently , KSEB maintenance workers travel on a vehicle to check damages on transmission lines. They check by looking through binoculars from the ground. "Our main problem is in hilly terrains where the chances of tree branches falling on power lines is high and frequent. Encroachments like people constructing houses under high tension transmission lines is another problem KSRB is facing," said P Vijayakumari, KSEB's director of transmission and system operation.

Approximate figures show that if power outage occurs in the transmission line drawn from Areekode in Kozhikode to Kanhirode in Kannur for 24 hours, KSEB loses about Rs 2.35 crore.
