KalamFormer President A P J Abdul Kalam on 25-11-2012 stressed the need for evolving energy utilisation norms for different industries like Cement, Steel, Urea and Textile on per capita basis. He suggested that an 'Idea bank' be created to which employees can provide innovative solutions for energy efficiency operations.

Kalam was speaking at a function in connection with launching of the project 'Energy for tomorrow' (Naleikkithiri Oorjam) by Energy Management Centre (EMC) and Kerala State Electricity Board.

It is essential to install progressively energy efficient nano lamps and energy efficient heating and AC systems as 75 million people in rural areas do not have electrical connection, he said.

EMC and KSEB have tied up with schools for sharing the message of energy conservation among the school students and thereby propagate the message to the people.

"It is very pertinent to note that efforts were being made to propagate the message for saving energy, embracing the alternative energy resources and how to adopt non-conventional energy resources in the future through 2500 school students of Kerala of the age group 14-18 years."

India has 200 million households out of which 60 million do not have access to electricity. There is need to have a national policy to provide grid independent distributed generation solar panel houses to these dwellings, Kalam said.
