KSEB Pins Hopes on North-East Monsoon

MonsoonThe 'performance' of the north-east monsoon will be key to the preparations being made by the Kerala State Electricity Board (KSEB) to take on the summer of 2015. Water storage in the hydel reservoirs of the KSEB stood at 77 per cent with water enough to generate 3,177 million units (MU).

Current average daily consumption stands at 57 to 58 MU, KSEB officials said. Last year, during the same period, the hydel reservoirs had enough water to generate 3,701 MU.

Idukki, where the KSEB's largest reservoir is situated, is 73 per cent full with water enough to generate 1,605 MU.

Owing to problems in central supply and space crunch in the inter-state transmission corridor at present, the KSEB is also buying power from NTPC's Rajiv Gandhi Combined Cycle Power Project (RGCCPP), Kayamkulam.

Although the retreating monsoon had started off on a promising note, the recent days have been dry with little inflow reported in the reservoirs.

If the north-east monsoon turns out to be weak, the KSEB will be in a bind as power consumption is expected to break through the ceiling during the summer, a senior KSEB official said.

During the 2014 summer, daily consumption had topped the 70 MU mark for the first time, forcing the KSEB to depend heavily on costly power purchases to tide over the crisis. And, for the first time, the power utility had to impose cyclical loadshedding in the state during the initial months of the southwest monsoon which followed on its heels.

The average daily consumption has been going up steadily over the years. Consumption had first crossed the 60 MU mark during the 2013 summer. In 2014, consumption had witnessed a jump by as much as ten million units.
