The power supply from the Paruthipara substation was switched off to prevent the fire from engulfing other transformers in the yard and to facilitate fire-fighting operations.
The timely intervention of the Fire and Rescue Services staff helped avoid a major accident as they could check the bursting of the CT and spread of fire to the other transformers.
Police personnel and a team led by Station Officer M. Rafeel and Assistant Station Officer Ajay T.K. managed to check the fire and bring the situation under control within 20 minutes. Fire and Rescue Services Control and KSEB officials said the cause for the fire was yet to be ascertained.
A KSEB official said the CT of one of the three transformers caught fire.
The power supply from Medical College, Paruthipara, Vattiyurkavu, Legislative Assembly, Power House, and Vizhinjam substations of the KSEB were affected by the incident. The power supply was restored later. The KSEB had suffered a loss of Rs.2 lakh on account of the fire, said the official.
