Kerala AssemblyOpposition in the Kerala Assembly staged a walkout on 10-10-2011 morning after the Speaker refused leave for an adjournment motion over load-shedding enforced by the State Government. The adjournment motion was piloted by Mr A.K. Balan of the CPI(M), a former Electricity Minister himself, who sought to blame the power availability position to faulty planning by the authorities.

Mr Balan warned that if the current situation is allowed to continue, it would even lead to a major power crisis during the next summer.

He even dared the Electricity Minister, Mr Aryadan Muhammed, to hand the portfolio over to him whence he would demonstrate how to effectively handle the situation.

Replying to the adjournment motion, Mr Muhammed stated that the power shortage could be attributed to the unforeseen hiccups in supplies from the Central pool.

The load-shedding was being resorted to only one half-an-hour cycle during peak hours at any place in the State.

The State Government expected to solve the crisis ‘within a few days' and restore normal distribution of electricity.

Based on the Minister's statement, the Speaker, Mr G. Karthikeyan, refused leave for the motion, sparking the walkout.
