SNC-Lavalin case: Kerala HC order confirms CBI was used as a political tool

Pinarayi VijayanThe Kerala High Court verdict in the SNC- Lavalin case confirms that the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) was used as a political tool against him, Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan said. Soon after Kerala HC cleared his name in the graft case, Vijayan addressed a press conference in Thiruvananthapuram.

While conveying his happiness at the order, Vijayan remembered late Kerala advocate general MK Damodaran who was part of the legal battle to expose the truth in the case.

The 79-year-old lawyer passed away recently due to poor health. He argued the case before the CBI special court in Thiruvananthapuram which quashed the chargesheet against Vijayan and others.

Vijayan recalled that right from the beginning truth has prevailed in each and every phase of the investigation. In the beginning the Congress-led United Democratic Front (UDF) government ordered a vigilance probe. But the vigilance didn't find any evidence against him. When the case was transferred to the CBI, the central investigating agency examined all the files and documents and arrived at the same conclusion.

Truth prevailed then too. But the CBI was used as a political tool against him to hound him and his party Vijayan said.

Nonetheless the CPI (M) central committee asserted that it was a politically motivated case. It became clearer when the CBI court quashed the chargesheet against him. Now, the High Court has upheld the lower court's order and went on to rap the CBI for dragging him into the case, Vijayan said, reminding that the Supreme Court described the central agency a "caged parrot".

The CM said he had faith in the judiciary. Moreover, the people of the state gave him a clean chit by electing him when he contested elections last year. "This verdict will be a big disappointment to the mysterious forces who were against (me)," Vijayan said.
