Ajay MathurBEE Director General, Ajay Mathur said that about 400 cities and towns in the country are to be covered in the next two years under the Bachat Lamp Yojana, an energy-efficiency drive to increase the use of CFL lamps. The Bachat Lamp Yojana, which promotes replacement of incandescent bulbs with Compact Fluorescent Lamps (CFL) bulbs, is an initiative of the Bureau of Energy Efficiency (BEE) under the Ministry of Power.

"We hope all of India can be covered in 400 project areas by the end of 2011," BEE Director General, Ajay Mathur told reporters.

The government has already initiated two pilot projects for distributing 6-8 lakh bulbs each at Yamunanagar in Haryana and Vishakhapatnam in Andhra Pradesh.

"The sale of CFL has grown from about 20 million in 2003 to around 200 million in 2008. This is part of government's drive to reduce emission of carbon dioxide (CO2) and spread energy-efficient measures for conservation," Mathur said.

"Himachal Pradesh, which is a net seller of electricity, has already sold 65 lakh CFLs. Kerala also had taken some initiatives. We will take our project to Bangalore, Hyderabad, Pune, Manipur, Raipur, Jaipur and Guwahati among many other cities," Mathur said.

Lighting accounts for about 20 per cent of electricity consumption, the official data says.
