The Maharashtra Electricity Duty Act Bill 2016 has been passed by State Assembly on 02-08-2016. The Bill, introduced by Energy Minister Chandrashekhar Bawankule, seeks to levy duty on power purchased from Mahavitaran (MSEDCL) and private power generating companies.
The Central Government had passed the Electricity Act in 2003 itself. However, some states did not implement the Act for varying reasons. Setting an example, the Maharashtra Government implemented the Act hence the State is likely to mop up revenue of around Rs 650 crore every year. The Maharashtra Electricity Duty Act Bill 2016 was on the lines of Central Electricity Act 2003 and was passed by the State Assembly today.
However, before it was passed, several amendments were made in the Bill. Earlier, consumers purchasing power from MSEDCL were themselves charged of the duty. But the consumers purchasing power from private electricity generating companies were being spared of the levy. But with the Bill passed, all the consumers will be charged of the duty irrespective from where the power is purchased.
