Centre has committed a five month supply of 600 mw to Tamil Nadu - Arcot N VeerasamyCentre has committed a five month supply of 600 mw to Tamil Nadu, Electricity Minister Arcot N Veerasamy told the state assembly on 13-11-2008. Veeraswamy, while answering a special call attention motion on the power situation in Tamil Nadu, said the Centre had yesterday conceded the state's request in this regard, made to Prime Minister Manmohan Singh by Union Shipping Minister and DMK MP, T R Baalu on the directions of Chief Minister M Karunanidhi.

"Tamil Nadu would be paying a sum of Rs 1050 crore towards this power, which would be available to us from December 1," he said. There was a likelihood of the supply being increased to 1000 mw following a request made by Baalu to the Centre today,he said.

This allocation will be of great help to Tamil Nadu during the summer season, he said.

While the current power deficit stood at 1800 mw, the state was taking all steps to increase power production, with various projects coming up in different parts of the state.

The 2000 mw Indo-Russian joint venture Koodankulam nuclear power plant, yet to go critical for want of uranium, was expected to start production by April 2009, while the second phase of production would be in December next year, he said.

Besides, the 1200 mw North Chennai Thermal Power plant will start producing 600 mw by December 2010.

Various power projects with a total capacity of about 6,000 mw were coming up across the state including Chennai, Mettur and Tuticorin he said adding when they started producing power, the current shortage would end. - Agencies
