ChandigarhChandigarh electricity department has moved a petition before the Joint Electricity Regulatory Commission (JERC) seeking approval of capital expenditure for the ambitious Smart Grid Project under National Smart Grid Mission. The Union Ministry of Power had recently approved a budget of Rs 28.50 crore for the project against the detail project report (DPR) of Rs 49.67 crore with 30 per cent grant from NSGM.

The ministry has set a deadline of 12 months for implementation of the project. However, the project would be developed as self-sustained business model. Giving more details, UT Superintending Engineer M P Singh said that the department gave a detailed presentation before the commission.

He said that the commission has given approval in principle and the formal approval will be given by next week. The electricity department has also floated tenders to hire firms for execution of the project.

The company would be required to provide around 30,000 smart meters along with associated communication and information technology infrastructure such as advanced metering infrastructure (AMI), meter data acquisition system (MDAS), meter data management (MDM), Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition (SCADA) and distribution transformer monitoring unit (DTMU). The agency will also be required to conduct load flow study.

The electricity department caters to a total of 2.12 lakh consumers, out of whom 1.75 lakh are in the domestic category. Of the total, there is regular billing of around 94 per cent of consumers. Under the system, smart meters will be installed that will send tamper alerts immediately to the control room, which will have a remote power shut-off capability.
