CITUCentre of Indian Trade Unions (CITU) greeted the electricity workers and officers of Jharkhand for their unified struggle and 45-hours recent strike to defeat the designs of Jharkhand Government to privatise the distribution of electricity in a press statement. In support of the striking workers, CITU resorted to solidarity action by staging demonstration, burning effigies, bringing out rallies and holding public meetings in different parts of the state including Jamshedpur, Adityapur, Ranchi, Giddi, Kedla, Gomia, Dhanbad, Pakur Jamtara, Ramgarh and Sahebganj.

Electricity Employees Federation of India also gave call to observe Solidarity Day on 10th December, 2012 as support to Jharkhand electricity employees and their valiant struggle against privatization and wrote letter to the Chief Minister to desist from this privatization move.

Government had to retreat during the hearing in Ranchi High Court today assuring that ESMA would not be imposed and there would no victimization and that MOU would not be operationalised during pendency of Court proceedings and on that basis the workers and officers had withdrawn their strike.

It is, however, unfortunate that the crisis was created by the Government of Jharkhand causing suffering of the people due to non-availability of electric supply despite the fact that there was a written assurance by the Chairman of JSEB that no MOU would be signed with any private company till the issue is discussed and agreed with the unions. It is, further, unfortunate that the Government decided to go ahead with the privatization despite a case remaining pending before the Supreme Court on this issue.

The CITU, Jharkhand State Committee demanded immediate revocation of the MOU on distribution of electricity, restore normalcy and settle all other issues with the Co-ordination Committee of Workers and Officers of Electricity Board through discussion.
