The total grid-interactive generation capacity in the country is - wind power at 17,353 mw, solar power at 941 mw, small hydro power at 3,396 mw and bio-power at 3,225 mw.
In 2011-12, a total of 1,056 villages were covered by PV solar lighting system, which constitutes about 11 per cent of the total villages/hamlets covered through renewable energy for lighting purposes till now. The past three years saw significant capacity addition in renewable energy sector. A total capacity of over 10,400 mw has been added from various renewable power generation projects during the last three years — 2009-10, 2010-11 & 2011-12. This comprises of 7,112 mw wind power, 965 mw small hydro power, 1,414 mw bio-power and 940 mw solar power.
Thanks to national solar mission, solar power installed capacity has risen from 8 mw in January 2010 to 1,000 mw now , with Gujarat accounting for over 650 mw of capacity.
During the period 2009-2012, FDI inflow was to the tune of Rs 5,826 crore ($ 1245 million) in 319 renewable energy projects across the country. The ministry of new and renewable energy has proposed specific targets for capacity addition various sources for the period 2012-17 in its twelfth five year plan proposals submitted to planning commission.
A target of 29,800 mw comprising 15,000 mw wind power, 2,100 mw small hydro power, 10,000 mw solar power and 2,700 mw bio-power has been proposed for capacity addition of grid-interactive renewable power during the 12th five year plan, according to Farooq Abdullah, minister of new and renewable energy. However, the government does not propose the state-wise targets for renewable power capacity addition.
