Maharashtra finance secretary has suggested a thorough inquiry through a special officer and with Comptroller Audit General (CAG) in the JSW Energy Ltd case, where the energy ministry favoured the company with an exemption of '576 crore from electricity duty. The Congress has demanded a high-level probe into the decision to grant electricity duty
waiver and fixing responsibility on those found guilty. Congress spokesperson Sachin Sawant claimed that the state government's own finance department had passed several strictures on the state government's decision to grant electricity duty waiver to JSW.
Meanwhile, speaking to newspersons at Mantralaya, minister for new and renewable energy Sources, Chandrashekhar Bawankule, argued that the decision to grant waiver had been taken during the previous Congress-Nationalist Congress Party regime.
Mr Sawant said that the decision to grant electricity duty waiver had now boomeranged on the electricity department. He alleged that the moment he sought information under Right to Information (RTI) on October 7, 2015, the department developed cold feet and on October 14, imposed a stay on the decision that had been taken earlier under pressure from powerful leaders. Mr Sawant further said that on October 24, the energy department shockingly clarified that the decision was taken due to an oversight.
