GREEPThe Goa Renewable Energy Education Park (GREEP), the first of its kind, is Planned to be set up at Margao. The park is expected to be completed by March 2010 at an estimated Rs 2.25 crore.N P S Varde, member secretary of the Goa Energy Development Agency told the media that 16,000 sq m of land was already acquired for the GREEP in Margao in the year 2007. He said he has studied such renewable energy parks in other states and has tried to incorporate certain new concepts in the GREEP.

Varde said that the centrally airconditioned main building will house the indoor exhibits. It will be a circular sun-shaped building housing various sections dealing with exhibits on hydro-electricity, wind energy and solar energy among other things. The solar hut will deal exclusively with solar energy and will have working models of solar water heating systems, solar cookers, solar home lighting, solar driers, solar parabolic cookers etc.

Outdoor exhibits will include working models on different renewable energy devices and systems. It will demonstrate how wind turbines move to produce electrical energy, how a biogas plant works. It will also showcase different types of water turbines where electricity is produced by running or falling water, besides demonstrating how electricity is produced when sunlight falls on a solar photovoltaic panel.

It is also proposed to have a life-sized parabolic solar cooker, a small train running on batteries that will be charged through solar energy and a well to irrigate the garden with the use of a solar pump.

Varde said, "The building roofs will have a rainwater harvesting system. Water will be channelized to a storage tank which will be used as a supplementary source."

Another novelty of the GREEP will be an information centre which will have an internet facility, miniature working models of different gadgets that work on renewable energy and a library of books imparting basic knowledge on renewable energy.

Varde said that he made a presentation of the proposed park to the Union ministry of new and renewable energy, Delhi in March 2008. The centre approved it immediately and sanctioned Rs 1 crore for the park. "The remaining Rs 1.25 crore will be appropriated by the state government," Varde said.
