Government to provide power supply to villages around generating stations: Sushilkumar Shinde

ShindeGovernment has decided to provide reliable power supply to the rural households of the villages within a radius of 5 km of the central generating power stations. This was announced by Union Power Minister, Shri Sushilkumar Shinde in the Lok Sabha while replying to a discussion on demands for grants of his ministry which was approved by voice vote. He said that Government is formulating a policy to see that areas in vicinity of power generation units do not remain dark.

The Minister also assured the House that the government will be able to achieve "Power to All" by 2012 as it is taking several steps to expedite ongoing power projects. Shri Shinde said that he would write letters to all Chief Ministers to ensure monitoring of ongoing projects as well as for expediting award of the contracts to bidders.

Shri Shinde Expressed confidence that the 11th Plan generation capacity addition target of over 78,000 MW would be met. Stating that not placing of order for power equipments well in time was the major shortcoming during the 8th, 9th and 10th Five Year plans, Shri Shinde informed the House that for the 11th Plan orders for equipments for more than 80,000 MW have been placed well in advance.

The Minister further said that the public sector undertakings under the power ministry have adopted 38 ITIs to train youth for meeting the manpower requirements of the sector.

Earlier, Members from various political parties lauded the efforts of power ministry to provide electricity to rural areas through its flagship programme of Rajiv Gandhi Grameen Vidyutikaran Yojana.
