India can become reservoir of solar energy: RK Pachauri

R K PachauriTerming the Indian subcontinent a potential dynamo of renewable energy, Nobel laureate and noted environmentalist R K Pachauri said given the vast resource of solar energy at its disposal, India can play a leading role in the arena of new and clean technology."Large parts of Rajasthan and Gujarat which are non-cultivable can become reservoirs of solar energy. Moreover, if we join hands with our neighbour, Pakistan, the entire desert area in Sind and large tracts of Baluchistan can be jointly used as bases of developing solar energy," said Pachauri, Chairman of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC).

Pachauri also advocated joint ventures between India and Pakistan to utilise their potential in this field, to help lessen the impact of climate change on the world. This will make the subcontinent a major dynamo of renewable energy, whose knowhow can then be supplied to other parts of the world, he said.

"With the developed world unwilling to give up the short term benefits accruing from the use of coal, India can emerge a major leader as far as new technology is concerned, besides also emerging a leader in combating climate change," Pachauri said at the inauguration of Enviro Tech 2008 exhibition in the national capital.

He also pointed out that the costs involved in replacing currently used technologies by environment-friendly ones will be "surprisingly low", according to estimates of his organisation, IPCC.

"Maximum costs of implementing environment-friendly technologies in 2030 would be less than three per cent of the GDP in that year. This means the rise in prosperity of the world to a particular level will be postponed by a few months," he said, adding, "it is not a heavy price to pay".
