India's First Electricity museum- CLP Electrodrome- inaugurated

Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi inaugurates India's First Electricity museum- CLP ElectrodromeCLP Electrodrome, A first of its kind electricity museum that displays evolution of power from earlier times to the nuclear power generation age through interactive models, was inaugurated on 29-04-2010 in Science City, Ahmedabad by Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi. The museum is a joint initiative of the Department of Science & Technology, Government of Gujarat, Gujarat Science City and CLP, the largest foreign investor in the Indian power sector. Housed within the campus of Gujarat Science City, CLP Electrodrome is the state-of-the-art and highly interactive museum of ‘Electricity’. It showcases the evolution of power, its global reach, the technology used and the importance of clean energy for the future of our country.

Also present at the inaugural ceremony was the minister of state for energy, Saurabh Patel; principal secretary of department of science and technology, Ravi Saxena; principal secretary of energy and petrochemicals, DJ Pandian; chief executive officer of CLP Holdings, Andrew Brandler, and managing director of CLP India, Rajiv Mishra. "This museum is the first of its kind in India, exclusive dedicated to several exciting aspects of electricity. Being an interesting mix of education and entertainment, this museum will hold a strong appeal for kids and adults from a variety of different backgrounds and interests," said Saxena.

Highlighting the value that CLP Electrodrome brings to the citizens of Gujarat and of India, Shri Narendra Modi, Chief Minister, Government of Gujarat said, “It gives me great pride to see India’s premier Electricity Museum being set up in our very own State of Gujarat. This revolutionary project is a reinforcement of Government of Gujarat’s commitment to building world-class knowledge infrastructure for our societies and helping the economy emerge as a global super power. The impact of such path-breaking initiatives will be seen at the very fundamental level of our society – the level that is super critical to progress of our nation but is tremendously underserved at present.”

Shri Saurabhbhai Patel, Minister of State for Energy & Petrochemicals, Government of Gujarat added, “As part of our sustained commitment to strengthen the learning and development infrastructure for the youth of our society, we are pleased to see our vision mature today in the form of ‘CLP Electrodrome’. This is the first of its kind and comprehensive electricity museum in India that will play a vital role in igniting interest in the electricity sector amongst our children. Electrodrome will provide a vibrant environment for families to experience the evolution of electricity, the constraints and challenges it faces today and the technologies that will redefine it
in the future.”

The museum has all that one needs to know about electricity. The discoveries and inventions that have evolved around electricity, the time line of a bulb, working models of Tesla Coil and Wimsherst Machine. A whole section has been dedicated to the renewable sources of energy like solar, wind, biomass waste and technology that uses less electricity like LEDs. There are interactive screens that depict animated films on related topics. There is also a section where the children can take 10 question quizzes on electricity.

‘CLP Electrodrome’ Highlights CLP Electrodrome is a journey that takes the visitor through various exciting experiences to explore the nuances of electricity. The 14,000 sq ft area is divided into 14 zones that highlight different aspects of electricity through numerous exhibits, information panels, movies, and interactive sections. The zone showcases interesting information on energy like the Connection of Electricity to Nature and Mythology, the Science of Electricity, Energy Efficiency and the need for Eco-Friendly Homes. Clean energy is an aspect reflected through green technologies and environment-friendly practices displayed in various zones. This is in line with CLP’s Climate Vision 2050, an initiative to help move the company into a low-carbon future and achieve a target of reducing carbon intensity of its power generation portfolio by 75% by 2050. The CLP Zone highlights the world-class technologies and best practices adopted at GPEC Plant in Bharuch, in addition to the numerous community programs the company has adopted in the region.

In addition, miniature and actual working models, large format replicas, world-class projection screens, sensor activated audio-visual experiences and special 3D effects through state-of-the-art LCD screens, makes this interactive museum the perfect blend of entertainment, education and technology. CLP Electrodrome provides the visitor with a unique insight into the energy sector, its significance in our daily lives and the economy at large.

CLP India is a wholly owned subsidiary of the CLP Group, a Hong Kong-listed company and one of the largest investor-owned power businesses in Asia. CLP India is one of the largest foreign investors in the Indian power sector and is responsible for developing CLP’s presence in that market. It has a diversified and climate friendly generation portfolio that covers renewable energy, supercritical coal fired, and gas fired generation, amounting to approximately 2,421 equity MW.CLP India owns and operates a 655MW gas-fired IPP in Gujarat. It is also one of the largest wind power developers in the country with approximately 446MW of committed wind projects at different stages of implementation. The total committed investment by CLP India is in excess of INR97 billion including the 1320MW coal-fired Jhajjar Power Plant in Haryana.
