PVEC-18The West Bengal has on behalf of India has managed to outbid 50 member countries to host the 18th International Photovoltaic Science and Engineering Conference & Exhibition (PVSEC-18).The conference will be held in Kolkata between January 19 and 23. It was first held back in 1992 in Delhi at a time when the solar power segment was at a nascent stage, and accordingly, is being held in India after a 16-years.

Talking on developments in the solar energy segment in Bengal, Mr S P Gon Choudhury, special secretary West Bengal power department said: "We may have managed to attract PVSEC-18 in Bengal since the state generates about 25% of the country's total solar power. Currently total installed capacity in India is about 60mw of which 17 mw is already installed and is generating power in the state."

"The state has already attracted a total investment of Rs 4000 crore in the solar power segment, all of which is expected to go on stream by 2012. Of this, about Rs 2,600 crore have been in the solar equipment manufacturing segment including solar photovoltaic cells and modules.

The investment has come from companies like Bhaskar Polysilicon (Rs 2000 crore), Vikram Solar (Rs 200 crore) and Webel SL Energy (Rs 100 crore). The balance has gone into setting up of 30mw solar energy generation capacity from companies like Videocon Industries, Astonfield, Hyderabad-based Titan group of industries," said Mr Gon Choudhury.

"India received 17 votes and won with Korea at second place, which managed to garner 13 votes. The Koreans were keen on holding the conference. Which is why, we had to make a fresh presentation to PVSEC members following the voting process and we managed to bag it for India. Bengal managed to convince the Indian committee for PVSEC to hold it in Kolkata," Ashok Kumar Barua, general chairperson PVSEC-18 told reporters in Kolkata.

"It is an international conference of repute and member countries include Japan, Germany, US all of whom competed in the voting system. As many as 50 countries including those from Japan, Korea, and US will be participating in the conference and the exhibition," he said.

The First Photovoltaic Science and Engineering Conference (PVSEC) was held in Kobe, Japan in 1984. It is one of the three most important Conferences in the area of Photovoltaics. Although Asia Pacific Region based the participation is from all over the world.
