Jammu and Kashmir identifies 16,400 MW power for harnessing

Jammu and Kashmir Putting forth the need for adequate power to aid industrial and economic growth of the state, the J&K government laid stress on harnessing the maximum identified power potential which stands at 16,400 MW within the targeted time frame. At the 55th meeting of the board of directors of Jammu and Kashmir State Power Development Corporation (JKSPDC) chaired by the Chief Minister Omar Abdullah, it was notified that the state has identified over 16,400 MW power potential for harnessing of the the estimated total 20,000 MW.

"This is must to the overall development and progress of the state," Abdullah said. The new power projects including the 93 MW new Ganderbal Hydel Electric Project and 37.5 MW Parnai Hydel Project were discussed.

Also, the issues relating to Baglihar Hydro Electric Project, stage II, and 19 other such projects with installed capacity of
308.70 MW were taken up by JKSPDC.

The government is currently executing four major projects by NHPC with a generation capacity of 449 MW in the state.
