Karnataka HC sore over faulty power supply in state

Karnataka HCA day after Chief Minister B S Yeddyurappa said in the Legislative Assembly that Bangalore would get 23 hours of power supply every day, the Karnataka High Court expressed displeasure against the government for not providing uninterrupted power supply in the state. Farmers are not getting adequate power, providing single- phase power would not help them, the court observed. The chief minister had told the Assembly that rural areas will get 12 hours power supply out of which six hours would be of three-phase electricity, which will help farmers.

Hearing a PIL, a division bench headed by Justice V Gopala Gowda directed the state to file a status report on the power management in the state by Friday.

Yeddyurappa had told the House that the power crisis in the state was a ‘legacy of the past governments’.

The High Court expressed unhappiness about the government’s order withdrawing the notification which directed the power-generating companies to supply electricity to the state grid under section 11 of Electricity Act.

The division bench has directed the state to submit a report on the number of power generation companies in the state, the number of cogeneration companies and the power generated by them.

The HC has asked the government to submit statistics on the number of power theft cases registered and disposed in the state.

The petitioner, a city-based advocate, has sought uninterrupted power supply during March and April as SSLC and PUC exams will be held in the period.
