Mangalore Electricity Supply Company Limited (MESCOM) imposes 12-hour load shedding in a day in rural areasThere will be 12-hour load shedding in a day in rural areas from November-14, 2008 and two-hour load shedding in Mangalore and other cities .S. Sumanth, managing director of Mangalore Electricity Supply Company Limited (MESCOM), said on 08-11-2008 that the load shedding might have to be increased in the days to come as the power situation was expected to worsen in the State. J. Krishna Palemar, Minister for Ports, Inland Transport, Environment and Ecology, presided over the meeting. Load shedding will be done in two phases of one hour each in the morning and evening.

Mr. Sumanth said that the rural areas would get three-phase power supply for 12 hours a day. It would be supplied at different intervals to different areas to ensure that no area remained in darkness continuously for the remaining 12 hours. The schedule of power cut would be announced soon, he said.

The two-hour load shedding would be in areas such as Bantwal, Puttur, Sullia and Belthangady. However, this would be done on a rotation basis and vary from one area to another in Mangalore as well as other cities, Mr. Sumanth said. Mr. Sumanth said that a meeting, chaired by S. Eswarappa, Minister for Power, in Bangalore this week, decided that rural areas could be supplied with three-phase electricity for six hours and single phase for the remaining six hours. However, Mescom would supply three-phase power for 12 hours a day to ensure that farmers having irrigation pumps did not face any problem.

He said that the water in the reservoirs of the State was only to the extent of 70 per cent of their capacity even as the demand for electricity was on the rise.
