MPAs if the hike in diesel prices and cap on supply on LPG cylinders was not enough, now get ready for a power shock as well! From October 1, power tariff is going to go up by 8 paise per unit. In addition to this, the electricity duty will also go up by one paise per unit. This means, effectively,
the power tariff will increase by 9 paise per unit in the state.

The Madhya Pradesh Electricity Regulatory Commission (MPERC) has given its approval for the hike and it will cover all categories of power consumers - domestic, non-domestic and agricultural consumers. The last revision of power tariff in the state was carried out in April this year.

These charges will be effective for three months - from October to December - after which yet another review will take place.

Confirming the hike, Awadh Bihari Vajpayee, chief engineer of Madhya Pradesh Power Management Company Ltd, said that circulars to all electricity distribution companied have been issued.

The government sources told HT that the rate per unit has been hiked because of the increase in fuel cost, which has increased from 10 paise per unit to 18 paise per unit. The fuel cost in the first quarter was 13 paise per unit, which subsequently came down to 10 paise per unit.

For a domestic consumer consuming 300 units of power per month will now have to pay an additional Rs. 27 on the electricity bill.

The existing rate of power for the domestic consumer is Rs. 4.50 per unit while for commercial consumers it is Rs. 6 per unit.

The state requires 6000 MW of power for its day-to-day consumption. It is drawing 3500 MW from the central pool while 90% of the remaining 2500 MW is its own production. The state purchases its power from NTPC, DVC and other enterprises.
