MSEDCLThe Maharashtra State Electricity Distribution Company Ltd stated that it will distribute around 47 lakh LED bulbs in the Kolhapur and Sangli circles. The initiative is to start in Kolhapur city from January 2016.

The Union government has undertaken a nationwide programme to replace electricity bulbs with LED bulbs as they consume less power compared to CFL bulbs. In its statement, the government said that energy saving is on its agenda as the saved power can be used for other purposes. The Union government is already spending a huge amount for laying new power lines and electricity transformers to provide power to villages. With more expansion of the power network, transmission losses are also mounting and cannot be controlled. The government has therefore proposed to undertake measures to bring down power consumption.

Energy Efficiency Services Ltd, a company formed by the Union government through its existing enterprises in the power sector, has been entrusted with the task of spreading awareness about power conservation.

The MSEDCL statement said that existing bulbs of 40 or 60watts of CFL will be replaced by the 7-watt LED bulbs. These bulbs will also run for longer than existing CFL bulbs.

The power body will start with the distribution of LED bulbs through its local offices.

Consumers can collect LED bulbs as per their requirements. A customer ID will have to be submitted with the MSEDCL after the bulbs are collected. Each bulb will cost Rs 110. The MSEDCL will also be charging Rs 10 with the regular bill from the next cycle. This is designed in such a way that citizens from even weaker section can participate in it, stated the statement.

The customers can also purchase the LED bulb by making onetime payment as well.
