MSEDCL proposal for additional load shedding rejected by MERC

MSEDCLMaharashtra Electricity Regulatory Commission (MERC) has rejected the demand of Maharashtra State Electricity Distribution Company Limited (MSEDCL) to increased load-shedding hours. The earlier protocol is valid now with certain modifications.

In a lengthy 58-page order on 28-11-2008, the MERC ruled on the petition filed by the MSEDCL for effecting additional loadshedding hours. The MERC has said that in case the demand-supply gap continues to prevail at levels higher than 4500 MW for extended periods of time, and does not look likely to reduce in the near future, MSEDCL may undertake higher levels of load shedding corresponding to the higher levels of demand-supply gap, as specified in this order.

In such circumstances, once the demand-supply situation comes back to normal levels, MSEDCL should revert to the earlier load-shedding protocol with lower hours of load-shedding. The commission has approved loadshedding hours for different levels of demand and supply gap. For instance, if the demand and supply gap is 2500-3200 MW, the load-shedding hours in the A, B and C groups would range from one hour fifteen minutes, two hours and two hours and forty five minutes respectively. Industrial load-shedding would amount to 16 hours, the order said.
