National Solar Mission to be launched on 2009 November 14

Solar missionON THE upcoming Children's Day, November 14, the birth anniversary of former Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru, the Centre would launch a National Solar Mission. Dr Farooq Abdullah had said that, India was planning a major thrust in the sphere of renewable energy sources, especially solar and wind energy, when he was addressing a gathering at the Aligarh Muslim university a few weeks ago. He called upon the centres of higher education to intensify their efforts in renewable energy, which he termed as the science of the future.

Earlier, Prime Minister Dr Manmohan Singh had announced that, in order to increase the use of solar energy and make it affordable, the Centre would launch the Jawaharlal Nehru National Solar Mission this year. He said that in the recent years, climatic change has indeed become a major issue and concern worldwide and India wants to tackle it in partnership with other countries of the world.

He added that glaciers will melt and rivers will go dry along with serious droughts and floods, if appropriate, timely action is not taken against climate change. Singh stressed on the need to prevent air pollution along with suggesting save water as a national slogan. Lastly, he had said that one needs to use to country's limited natural resources, efficiently.

The National Solar Mission was announced as a first step of the National Action Climate Change Plan. The Prime Minister's council had also approved a multi crore plan, which aims to generate 20,000 MW solar energy by 2020.
