Central Power Distribution Company Limited of Andhra Pradesh (CPDCL)Procuring a new power service connection is going to be a costly affair in Andhra Pradesh, as consumers who wants to install a new connection has to shell out additional development charges which could be up to 100 percent. The Central Power Distribution Company Limited of Andhra Pradesh (CPDCL) has submitted proposals to the Andhra Pradesh Electricity Regulatory Commission (APERC), requesting it to consider enhancement of development charges for different categories.

It has planned to increase the development charges for LT-1 category domestic services with a connected load up to 250 Watts for that Schedule Caste (SC) and Schedule Tribe (ST) consumers between Rs 300 and Rs 500, up to 251 to 1,000 watts from Rs 1,000 to Rs 2,000 and for above 2000 plus, Rs 2000 KW or part there of or contracted load.

For LT-II category connection it has proposed to increase development charges form Rs 2,000 per KW or part thereof to Rs 4,000 per KW per KW or part thereof, for multi storied structures that are either domestic or commercial complexes and new housing colonies or urban development authorities from Rs 1,000 per KW as part thereof to Rs 4,000 per KW or part thereof for commercial complex.

CPDCL officials explained that since August 2005, when the Regulatory Commission had given its order relating to development charges, the cost of materials increased abnormally and with the present level of development charges it would be difficult to provide infrastructure for prospective consumers.

In the case of other Discoms, they were adjusting such increase in the cost of material, without increasing development charges, they said and added that the cost of material went up manifold and the CPDCL could not bear the burden any more. CPDCL officials hope the APERC will take a suitable decision.
