The row over tariff rates for different categories of consumers had been going on for quite some time. The matter was taken to the high court and then to the Tribunal. The Tribunal did not support the OERC method of calculating the tariff and directed it to redo the cost of supply on voltage basis.
The OERC moved the Tribunal with a review petition. Even as the petition was pending disposal, one industry went to the Supreme Court which upheld the Tribunal decision.
"We apprehend the apex court order will add heavy burden on the domestic consumers, increasing the per unit tariff by more than Rs one. We have not yet seen the judgment copy," said a senior energy department official.
