Orissa Power sectorMaytas Infrastructure, a sister concern of the defamed IT major Satyam Computers, has its shadow in Sundergarh district of Orissa state. As the infrastructure company has taken up rural electrification programme on sub-contract basis from Power Grid Corporation of India Limited (PGCIL) in 11 out of 14 blocks of the district, the Government has reason to be apprehensive. The Central Government agency PGCIL, however, is confident of starting the electrification programme well before the model code of conduct came into force.

After a review on the progress of rural electrification works under Rajiv Gandhi Gramin Vidyutkaran Yojana (RGGVY) in the 10 districts under the northern revenue division at Sambalpur today, Energy Secretary Pradip Kumar Jena told this paper that the central executing agencies are confident of starting the project in each block before the model code of conduct came into force.

The Energy Secretary has set a target for the executing agencies to erect at least 15 poles with wire stringing in each block before February 15, the expected date of issue of notification for the general election by the Election Commission.

The Energy Secretary sought to know from PGCIL officials if the Maytas Infra is in a position to meet the contractual obligations as the RE programme of a majority blocks of Sundergarh district has been awarded to the company.

The PGCIL representatives assured Jena that there will be no problem in the execution of infrastructure projects in the district as Maytas Infra has confirmed that it has no liquidity problem for this project.

Survey work in almost all the villages of the 10 districts is over and there is no material constraint. Except Jharsuguda, which is procuring the poles from Chhattisgarh, all other districts are making local purchase as new cement pole manufacturing units have come up in these districts.

The implementing central agencies have also identified locations for installation of grid sub-stations. Jena requested the district collectors to extend necessary cooperation to the implementing agencies for timely implementation of the project and regular monitoring of the Centrally-sponsored programme.
