KERCWith the results of the Zilla Parishat elections out, the Karnataka state government is in no mood to file a review petition against a hike in power tariff. Simply put, the power tariff hike will be implemented soon. Karnataka Electricity Regulatory Commission (KERC) had recently passed an order increasing power tariff. The commission had passed on 22 paise per unit out of the increased average cost of 45 paise per unit proposed in the tariff determined for 2011. The remaining 23 paise would be treated as regulatory asset.

The increase for domestic lighting and heating installations in areas under urban local bodies and city corporation areas ranges from 5 paise to 60 paise per unit depending on the consumption slab. The first four slabs in all consumer categories (domestic/commercial and industrial) see an increase between 25 paise and 40 paise. If you were paying Rs 1,108.50 for consuming 300 units, you will now have to pay Rs 1,207. The rates for the remaining slabs won't change.

Soon after KERC passed the order , the state government, with an eye on ZP polls, perhaps, had stated that it will file a review petition against the hike. However, energy minister Shobha Karandlaje on Tuesday told TOI that managing directors of all electricity supply companies (Escoms) were against filing of the review petition. " Escoms are already facing loss. I have called for a meeting. We will take a decision after talks," she said.

Sources in Bescom said the government will not file a review plea before KERC. Soon, a notification will be issued for implementation of the order. KERC chairman MR Sreenivasa Murthy said no review petition has been filed so far. Sources in the commission said the government might implement hike in another two or three days.
