Chief engineer Powercom western zone Jaspal Singh said he has already asked all field staff to check the power supply, consumption and electric meters at the residence of all these `suspected` officers. Information procured under RTI revealed how a large number of bureaucrats in Punjab `misuse` power as their electricity bills are `indirectly` paid by the state government.
Though fitted with many ACs and other high-power consuming modern electric gadgets at the their official residence, the monthly power bill of the officers of SSP and DC rank in this area is very meager, most of the times, and even below Rs 200 per month! RTI information also revealed that the monthly power consumption at the official residences of some SSP rank officers in the region is nil.
In Moga, there was no power consumption at the official residence of SSP for 10 months in year 2008 and 2009. Even in the next eight months, the total monthly power consumption was less than one unit per month. In Faridkot, there was no power consumption at the residence of SSP from August 2008 to November 2009. Though the sanctioned power load at the residence of Ferozepur DIG is quite heavy, being 6.90 KW, but the bill for November-December 2010 showed a usage of half-a-unit daily.
The average power consumption at the residence of SDM Ferozepur was just five units per month in 2009 and it was nine units per month in 2008. With a connection of 5 KW load, the average power consumption at the residence of SDM Faridkot is just 37 units per month in May and June, 2009, in peak summer months.
Though fitted with many ACs, the average monthly power consumption at the official residence of Bathinda SSP was around 65 units from April 2009 to August 2010. "We have asked for the inspection of domestic power consumption at DC`s residence," said SE Bathinda Inderjit Garg. Interestingly, there is no electricity meter at the residence of SDM Budladha and Malout, revealed the RTI information.
