Congress MP Sandeep Dikshit against DERCTo cheer the Reliance Group, Congress MP Sandeep, who represents East Delhi Lok Sabha constituency, asked the Delhi Chief Minister and his mother Sheila Dikshit to disband the Delhi Electricity Regulatory Commission(DERC), which he said is being run by a set of people "who are completely inactive." "This commission is doing nothing and has proved it self worthless. As an MP and a citizen of Delhi I demand that you pull out the power of attorney from it," he said. The MP was speaking at the foundation laying ceremony of Reliance subsidiery BSES' 66/11 kv power grid at the Commonwealth Games village site, where the Chief Minister was the chief guest.

DERC is one among the most active and vigilant SERCs in the country. Recently they had detected the document forgery of Reliance owned private discoms and DERC disallowed BSES’s plans to pass on costs amounting to Rs 950 crore to consumers. Appeal of Reliance in this regard is pending with Appellate Tribunal now. This may have irked the Congress legislator as the help of the corporates are required in comming elections.

The BSES is setting up the new grid to meet the electricity requirements during the sporting extravaganza which is scheduled to be held in Delhi next year.Sandeep said, "I am making very serious allegations against DERC and demand that you (the Chief Minister) at least change the current set of people there as they are completely inactive." However, his mother did not seem to have a similar opinion of the regulatory body, which has faced flak from consumers now and then. When asked about the demand made by Sandeep, the Chief Minister simply said, "It seems he is not satisfied with it. We keep getting complaints and we look into them," she said.

The DERC was constituted by the Government of Delhi in 1999 and is mandated to regularize the electricity tariff, power generation and distribution. The MP may not be aware of the fact that disbanding a regulatory body like DERC is not easy as the customers of Delhi had already welcomed many initiatives of the DERC against private discoms.
