Tamil Nadu swiftly expanding power generation capacity

TNThe Tamil nadu State Government hopes to award the contract for the Udangudi 1,330 MW super critical thermal power project by December-end. The 2x660 MW power project will come up in Tuticorin at a cost of ₹10,121 crore, according to an official press release.

Along with the two power projects — Ennore Thermal Power Station expansion of 660 MW and the Ennore SEZ Thermal Power Station of 2x660 MW — on which work has started the State will get an additional 3,300 MW additional power.

In line with the State Government's announcement on adding to the power generation capacity, work is on to implement additional capacity for a 1,600-MW project at Uppur, Ramanathapuram; 800 MW third unit at the North Chennai thermal power station; and a 660-MW plant at Ennore; and the second and third phases 2x660 MW each at Udangudi. In 2014-15, Tamil Nadu will get an additional 1,529 MW power with more power projects going onstream.

These include the State's share from the NLC expansion project of 2x250 MW; and the joint venture between TNEB and the NLC at Neyveli, a 2x500-MW project; the joint venture with NTPC at Vallur for 500 MW; and from the Kudankulam Nuclear Power project where a 1,000-MW unit has started.
