DMK's poll promise that weavers would be given 200 units free electricity has struck the perfect chord with the weaving community in Chinnalapatti in Dindigul district. In return, the community has vowed to vote for the DMK in the assembly election
Welcoming the promise, weavers distributed sweets among themselves especially in the 12th ward which has a large number of people belonging to the weaving community. Chinnalapatti is a weaving town with about 2,000 families involved in the age-old profession. Weavers said the DMK had never let them down from 1972 whenever the party came to power.
They also recalled how free houses were given to them in Rani Anna Colony, Kalaignar Karunanidhi Colony, Anjugam Colony, Janata Colony, Nanjil Manoharan Colony, Kalaimagal Colony, Gandhiji Colony, M Po Sivagnanam Colony and in addition to 50 to 100 units of free power.
Pandian, a weaver said that when DMK treasurer M K Stalin toured their region recently, the community appealed to him to provide free power as they were facing many hardships and unable to pay their electricity bills. They had also told him that sarees woven by them should be sold through Co-optex showrooms in the state.
Secretary of the weavers association, Gopi, went on a door-to-door campaign and distributed sweets to the residents. Sudahar, a weaver said the DMK would be ensured of about 11 lakh votes from their community across the state.
Meanwhile, people of Athoor constituency have said that it is a foregone conclusion that I Periyasamy, sitting MLA would be elected once again.
