Energy Conservation FundThe West Bengal state power department is planning to set up an energy conservation fund, which could be utilized for implementing projects to conserve energy. State power department secretary Sunil Mitra said that a proposal had been placed to set up an energy conservation fund and talks were on with the finance department on this issue. "We are working on the proposal. There is also a proposal to form a body on a working level to work on energy conservation issues. There is a body on the policy level," he said.

Power minister Mrinal Banerjee said there should be a long-term planning on the issue of energy conservation. "The way global warming is taking place, we have to find out an alternative, substitute source of energy to tackle the problem. It is true that using solar power is at present quite costly, but the rates could be reduced if production of renewable energy is increased. However, our immediate task is to save energy," the minister said.

The minister also expressed his concerns over the cutting of trees in reckless manner.

"Thousands of trees are getting chopped off. There are quite a few political parties supporting this heartless chopping of trees," Banerjee asked.
